Message from Lions Bay Search & Rescue:
A "Simple" Sprained Ankle Can End Your Day

If you asked Search and Rescue what injury ends more hikes than almost any other, the answer might surprise you: a sprained ankle.

It may sound minor, but once you can't put weight on your foot, even an easy trail can become impossible to descend. A great day in the mountains can quickly turn into a rescue.

We were reminded of this recently during a rescue on Mount Brunswick, where a hiker stepped on loose rock while descending and was unable to continue.

Why Do They Happen?

Most ankle sprains aren't caused by one big mistake. They're usually the result of several small factors:

• Wet rocks and slippery roots

• Loose rocks and uneven terrain

• Fatigue late in the day

• Rushing the descent

• Footwear that isn't suited to the terrain

One thing many hikers don't realize is that a previous ankle sprain is one of the biggest risk factors for another one. If you've rolled your ankle before, consider wearing an ankle brace and continuing balance and strengthening exercises to reduce the chance of re-injury.

Preventing Ankle Injuries

• Use hiking poles for extra stability.

• Slow down on the descent—this is when many injuries occur.

• Watch your footing on wet roots and loose rock.

• Wear appropriate footwear for the terrain.

• Carry an elastic compression wrap or lightweight splint.

If You Sprain Your Ankle

• Stop hiking immediately.

• Stabilize the ankle if possible.

• Call for help early through 911 or your satellite communicator.

• Stay where you are and wait for rescuers.

A sprained ankle may not sound like an emergency, but in the backcountry it can quickly become one. A few simple precautions can make the difference between hiking out under your own power and needing Search and Rescue.
