2022 JUL-19 Day 26/36
Granite Peak, MT
Summit Day 8km round trip
The wind blew hard all night and never abated until late morning. So we dropped our hopes to climb the summit for that day.
We decided to take a look at the route and perhaps climb to the "notch" which is about 60 meters below the top. We set our turn back time at 2:00 p.m.
Suprisingly, it was ovenight freeze.
Passing another tent site. No running water though.
This is the end of Froze-to-Death Plateau.
Granite Peak just before we have to drop down to the saddle with Tempest.
Always a question - do we put crampons or not? This stretch is super short, but it is icy.
No clouds, only blue sky. Rare conditions for this area.
Hard snow
Now on the rock.
Infamous "snow bridge" is actually a chute, steep and exposed can be seen on Google Earth. We have to cross it twice.
First pitch.
There are at least 6 rap stations on the route, which is always a good sign telling we are on the correct path.
We had no other climbers on the route. Chimneys like this can be a bottleneck, e.g. if there is a commerical team of 6+ coming up or down.
Dry and stable rock - many parties have passed by over years and all loose stones are gone.
Which way to go? Many climbers get lost and return from here, just less than 100m below the summit. The photo was taken from the nortch which we set as an objective to the day, but it was only 11:52 a.m. so we pressed forward.
Exposed moves. Handrail above helps for the balance, but many don't know about it.
We cross this section only once, will rappel down on the way back.
The summit! 1:15p.m.
At the top of Granite Peak (MT), our 13th State High Point.
It was zero wind and blue skies. And not even smoke from wildfires!
California Climbers' Salute at the summit of Granite Peak, MT
Selfie at the top.
Time to go down. Passing the "keyhole".
Five rappels on a single 30m dynamic rope and a static cord, we have trained this setup before.
Some yoga strecth for variety.
Last rappel is the longest, full 30m.
Back from the snow bridge.
This is Tempest Mountain - often those who fail the Granite, will hike it as a consolation.
