Top 10 Free Events at Games time

Looking for something to do during the 2010 Winter Games that will cost as little as…nothing? Check out some of the free activities happening in Vancouver below. Your neighbourhood may also be hosting family fun events during the 2010 Winter Games. Check the Host City Event Calendar for more free, fun community events!

LiveCity Vancouver (David Lam Park and Georgia/Cambie Street)
Just a few minutes from BC Place Stadium, LiveCity Yaletown will host Olympic sport and cultural programming, a water-side stage and a nightly closing show suitable for the entire family. LiveCity Yaletown will host thousands of people daily and will be open during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games (February 11 to 28, 2010), along with a pre-Games kick-off event in early February 2010. Proposed hours of operation for the site are 11 am to 11 pm, seven days a week. Preparation of the site will begin in late 2009.

Paint the Town Red
The City of Vancouver encourages all residents Paint Vancouver Red as we welcome the Olympic Torch Relay on February 11 and 12, 2010. Wear a red sweater, red scarf, red toque, red socks and bring down a Canadian flag as the Olympic Torch passes through your neighbourhood and cheer loudly for the Canadian Olympic Team!

Olympic Line - Vancouver’s 2010 Streetcar (Cambie and 2nd)
The Olympic Line – Vancouver’s 2010 Streetcar will launch January 21, 2010 at the Canada Line Olympic Village Station located at Cambie and West 2nd Avenue. Be the first to ride the train and receive a ‘free rider’ certificate. The modern streetcar will link Granville Island to the Canada Line Olympic Village Station between January 21 and March 21, 2010. Transit trips on the Olympic Line will be free. +more

Public art illuminates the night sky downtown Vancouver
Design and submit your artwork to be displayed across the water. Starting dusk on February 4, 2010, 20 robotic searchlights will create a quiet canopy of light in the night sky above and on the sparkling surface of English Bay below, with designs created by people around the world and delivered via the Internet. This project, called Vectorial Elevation, will be the first time the internationally celebrated work of art will be displayed in Canada and over a body of water.

Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays
Vancouver is getting set for the Olympic Torch to shine brightly as the Olympic Flame arrives in Vancouver on February 11, 2010. The flame’s arrival kicks off the two-day Olympic Torch Relay.

Paralympic Torch
Also coming to town is the Paralympic Torch on March 10, 2010, with a celebration in and around Hillcrest Park and the first-ever 24-hour Paralympic Torch Relay at Robson Square in Downtown Vancouver on March 11 and 12, 2010. Have you ever dreamed of carrying the Paralympic Flame? Now’s your chance to fulfill your dream! Apply to be torchbearers for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Torch Relay.

Tour the Lantern Forest at LunarFest (Granville Street)
Enjoy a nice walk on Granville Street between Robson and West Georgia between January 22 and February 28, full of lanterns made by local children and public art sculptures. On February13 and 14, the whole family can enjoy a parade by Public Dreams and make their own lanterns, too. The festival is just one of many activities expected to take place on the designated pedestrian corridors along Granville, Robson, Beatty and Hamilton/Mainland during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.


View the Da Vinci Exhibit at the VAG
From February 12 to18, admission to the Vancouver Art Gallery is free. Enjoy full access from 10 am to 5 pm to the BC Pavilion at the VAG, and and check out the landmark exhibition of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, two major outdoor installations and a survey of B.C. visual art.

Skate at GE Plaza (Robson Square)
Take a whirl on the newly restored and already highly popular ice rink daily from noon to 9 pm (weather permitting). No skates? Rent a pair for just $3 (and helmets are free for those under 12) or bring your own. Robson Square will feature live entertainment, sport demonstrations, light shows, video displays, and fun for the whole family.

Experience the 2010 Cultural Olympiad
From artistic collaborations that fuse contrasting perspectives to emerging talents re-inventing the voice of contemporary Canada, the Cultural Olympiad running January 22 to March 21, 2010 has something for everyone with many activities free or affordably priced. This amazing showcase of Canadian and international arts and popular culture will feature an unparalleled variety of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film, outdoor spectaculars and digital media experiences.

Bamboo Welcome Gates
Bamboo Welcome Gates is an installation in Vancouver's historic Chinatown during the 2010 Winter Games where visitors and residents to Zodiac Square will be invited to write Welcome World Wishes for an athlete and/or country. Wishes will be created and placed onto the Bamboo-Cedar Gateways in colourful red, water-resistant envelopes and be read  every day to groups of visiting school children and 2010 Winter Games visitors.
