Nationals Are Calling!
----Jim Haberl Hut is officially open

The hut is situated in the Serratus-Dione col, NW of Serratus Mountain and just outside the boundary of Tantalus Provincial Park. (11 km W of Cheekye). (1 km NW of Serratus Mountain).

Access: Normally reached by climbing from the Tantalus Hut at Lake Lovely Water over the Serratus-Ionia col. Alternately, approach from the north via Sigurd Creek trail, on a multi-day traverse of mountains and glaciers.

Description: The hut was erected in 2005 by numerous volunteers from the Squamish, Whistler and Vancouver mountaineering scene including the mountain guiding community, the Alpine Club of Canada - Vancouver Section and 192 Airfield Engineering Flight. The seminal moment was when funding for the hut was achieved through the Jim Haberl Fund.

If we go, where do we stay? The Tantalus Hut? or Jim Haberl Hut? Alex said Jim Haberl Hut should be 3 days trip.

FYI:

The Route from Lake Lovely Water to the Jim Haberl Hut

July 03, 2005   (3 days) Calculated Length: 5 km   92 G/14

Difficulty: moderately strenuous

Abstract: Marking out the safest route to ascend to and descend from the new Jim Haberl hut.

On Sunday Nynke and I met Jay Bickwell to be ferried across the Squamish River. It was 9:40 as we started hiking. The route through the logging slash has been recently bushed out by some benefactor. We climbed up noting blowdowns and snipping at bush in the slide paths we met (I've never met a slide alder, or devil's club I haven't wanted to snip!) along the way. Arrived at the cabin by four in the afternoon.
Monday morning was raining, but by eleven it dried up and we left for Lambda Lake and beyond. The trail to Lambda is well marked but not easy, with sections of talus, steepness, and a hand-over-hand haul up a fixed line expertly placed at a difficulty. Beyond Lambda the route is sketchier though a keen and focussed eye can easily follow the route up onto the ridge from the south side of the lake. Once on the ridge west of the lake that bears roughly north-west toward the Alpha-Serratus col I renewed faded markings with an eye for the descending party. A key is that when the flat plain big enough for the Russian Army to camp in is reached turn sharply north and work up to the last firs above some tiny lakes and here we turned around as it was late and starting to rain. I flagged a couple of cairns and a fir so that a descending party could pick up the trail from above.

Cairns were noted leading beyond the lakes and I can only assume, with Ron Royston's agreement, that these lead into the traverse of the slopes south of Serratus that are the best route into the Jim Haberl Hut.

Once you travel west of the little lakes you are above treeline in rugged alpine terrain. Rapid weather changes, loose and falling rock, steep snow and ice with crevasses may be encountered. Be prepared and give yourself adequate time to reach the huts or return.

East of the Serratus-Ionia col there are two obvious options to reach the hut, directly across a steep and crevassed slope of ice and rubble above a cliff band or by dropping 130 meters below the cliffs to flat ground and climbing right up to the Red Tit hut. It has been my experience, when our party split to try both routes, that the latter is safer, not scary, and quite a bit faster than the direct line.

THE KEY POINT IN NAVIGATING DOWN FROM THE HUT TO LAKE LOVELY WATER. When descending, patiently keep traversing east below Mt. Serratus taking care not to drop into cliffs above the Russian Army Camp. Once around the south ridge of Mt. Serratus follow the easiest line south-eastward toward small lakes at GR 798 149 on the Cheakumus River Map. Watch for cairns and pick up the trail at the little col just east and slightly above the lakes.

From those lakes it took us two hours and forty-five minutes to steadily and carefully (read slowly) get back to the Lake Lovely Water Cabin. Plan on four hours from there to descend to the Squamish river.

Please note, that due to the wet weather, construction on the Jim Haberl Hut is behind schedule. For information about the hut or volunteering for the construction check out www.jimhaberlfund.org. The Red Tit Hut is still in place.

Lake Lovely Water Trail

Nationals Are Calling!
Lake Lovely Water Trail

Access To: ACC Cabin at Lake Lovely Water, and Tantalus Range.

Condition: Steep and spectacular. Aside from the lowest sections which are a thrash through a clearcut, the trail is in pretty good condition. It is similar in length and ruggedness to the Wedgemount Lake Trail in Garibaldi Park. Parties carrying heavy packs should allow about 3-4 hours to reach the Tantalus Hut. Travelling to the Red Tit Hut is feasible, but is a long day.

General Route: From the Squamish River up through old growth to Lake Lovely Water.

How To Find: Take an unmarked dirt road at Mile 9.1 on the Squamish Main. The road winds its way ~1km to the E bank of the Squamish River. At the river, there is a cable across the river for water surveying and shortly afterwards the road ends at the river bank. To cross the river requires a boat because the cable car is private. The cable car is normally locked on the E side but the lock is frequently vandalized and the car hijacked and left on the W side (and locked by the hijackers). Other crossing practices involve hanging off the cable in a climbing harness using self-made pulley systems and sliding hand-over-hand along the main cable or hanging off steel rescue carabiner (one inch or larger jaw) with climbing sling backup and sliding slowly hand-over-hand. The most extreme was performed by ace climber Peter Croft- standing on the main cable and using as a handhold the smaller cable above which holds the aircraft beacons. Not to be repeated as the cables sway and tend towards a horizontal plane in the middle. The river is ~300m wide and a plunge will be fatal.

So, use a canoe and hide and lock it to a tree on W side. (Some were left stranded when their unlocked canoe was stolen.) All possibilities carry an air of adventure which is why most people now fly in and out. If crossing by canoe, it is possible to put in upstream of the cable tower and ferry across to sand bars on W side. The landing on the west side is easy, about 300m upstream from the cable car. There is a trail from the sandy beach that joins the other trail (from the cable car) in a clearcut. Crossing normally requires two paddlers and experience is recommended. From the cable tower on W side, the trail leads upstream for a short distance before it angles away from the river.

The lower part of the Lake Lovely Water trail crosses private land and was logged in 1995. The parking area on the E bank of the river is Squamish Indian Band territory. There is no longer a formal agreement with the band that permits parking, so parking is at own risk.

History: On a historical note: In 1961, the ACC had an agreement with Moses Billy to ferry climbers across the river in his dugout canoe. Today, to make arrangements for the jet boat service contact Jay Bicknell (604-815-9647). For cabin arrangements contact Alpine Club of Canada.
