Finished my Navigation training with Whatcom County SAR last night and one of the instructors was using this CalTopo.

I will follow up with more info.

Check it out in the mean time and I like what I have seen so far during the training.

You can select the area with scale and print it in PDF or export it to your GPS. Was told there might be an app to use it on the Smartphone too.

Download and print the attached PDF on 8.5 X 11 paper...or generate your own map, (recommended) for the experience. ...It's very easy to use Caltopo!

Open Caltopo.com

Double click on the N America basemap until the area you want are in view.

Move cursor to “print” and click  “Print to PDF or JPG

Check box by: “UTM” spaced at “1 KM”, “WGS 84”;  other options as they are

Move map center dot to desire area

Expand/ contract map quadrangle from corner until scale reaches (recommend) 1:16000 (approx).   Scale used for climbing should be no greater than 1:24,000.

Click “Generate PDF” and save to your computer or drive.

Print and view this map using (I recommend) Foxit PDF reader.

Download this safely from CNET if you wish.  Foxit is lighter and more functional that adobe.

PS:   Foxit has a functional snapshot tool for pulling clips out of the full-sized quads you may download from USGS.  Foxit also allows removing the annoying background colors from forms.
