Glacier wands are used to mark known (but of course not all) crevasses: beneath this innocent looking snow surface lay a deep hole. 8)

Rainier has it all - big glaciers, big elevation gain, and a big reward!

Need to be careful out here. Still, one of us attempted to dive (yes, head down!) right into this crevasse on the return. 8)

Summit!

信不信,由你,反正我是信了!

Standing on the top of Mt Rainier (4,392 m), the highest peak in the Cascade Range and the most heavily glaciated mountain in the "lower forty-eight." Hard to believe only ten months ago her best Grouse Grind time was whooping two hours!

Expect times between 7-9 hours up and 4-5 down.

Our time: camp Schurman to the Summit - 5h50m and 3h35m back down 8)

Previous summer this route (Emmons Glacier from camp Schurman) had two serious climbing accidents involving several people whom I personally climbed with or people who knew me. One accident was fatal.

Crevasses are harder to detect when walking down on the glacier, so one should take mental note of those on the way up. This photo taken shortly before taking a dive.

When snow bridges become soft later in the day they can collapse under body weight, so if possible, better to jump over. ( Practice! )

PHOTO: jumping over snow bridge ended head down, but stopped short over a crack. Note that all attached gear  sustained such a fall - usually a climber would lose a snow picket or ice axe slipping out of the loops.
