Majority of alpine beginners don't realize that fast speed is not what brings one to the top. I often hear "he is fast", or "she is fast" - good for them, but it is not what makes a successful alpine climber. The fast speed never impresses me, I have seen 25 y.o. 35-min GG runners collapse on simple alpine routes totaled from exhaustion. Most of the time I am "faster" in alpine than young climbers half of my age, so young that even their parents are younger than me! I am "fast" not because I am fitter, most certainly everyone will outrun me on BCMC trail. Strange to hear, but the technique how you walk distances ("alpine walk"), flat or not ( approach, climbing, downlcimbing, boots or crampons, with overnight or a day pack), how and when you eat and how and when you drink are what makes most of the difference. I know in the Andes local commercial climbing guides deliberately set up  high speeds to burn clients, so the clients give up quick and later blame themselves for being "slow" - less work, same money! Big expeditions (e.g. Mt McKinley) were ruined because of one such fast "yahoo" set up high speeds and burn everybody down. There are some more important components specific to alpine (is it not exciting?!), but none of them is related to fast speed. It is 80% in the head, and only 20% in the legs, strange but true! 8)
