two emails I got from backpackers who went backpacking Stein Divide last year.

Email from Mike

Hi Gloria,

The trail is quite distinct as you head away from the Lizzie Cabin.
There is a branch of the trail that heads off to Long Lake , but you
want to head towards Heart Lake (it's in the direction that the back of
the cabin faces, whereas Long Lake is more in the direction that the
right wall faces - as you face the cabin).

We hung our food at Tundra as there were some good trees around there.

I've attached the waypoints as a Word doc. Is that what your're looking for?

Mike

Email from Bob

Gloria,

I have watched your adventures this year and been quite impressed.  You may
be able to do what you planned.

I went to the Stein last July on a regular weekend and it is my sweatshirt
that everybody is using as a landmark.  I dropped it on the way back at the
detour and I guess it is being put to good use.

Anyway, I started on Friday around 6:00pm and was at Lizzie by 9:00pm.  The
logging road was a piece of cake – kind of like hiking up Rubble Creek.  It
is 9km so I only had to do 3km per hour.  The only tricky part was the first
three minutes.  The creek is crazy to cross (impossible).  The only way is
to shimmy on logs(scary).  The other way is to find the detour that
everybody uses.  You hike up a steep road from the parking lot (three or
four minutes) and look for a small cairn on the right.  Head into the bush
and follow the trail for a good 10 minutes.  It would help to have hiking
poles because you are going to be close to some steep parts.  It dumps you
out back on the road – after the washout – at my sweatshirt.

I shimmied over on logs on the way to the Stein and took the route on the
way back.  I found a log downstream from the parking lot and crossed back on
a large one just upstream.  I would recommend the route over the logs.
Remember - don't even think about trying to cross the creek by foot.  It is
not possible.

I started Saturday at 5:30/6:00am and was at the cabin at 7:19am according
to my GPS.  I continued on to Tundra and was there around noon.  It took two
hours to cross the boulder field to the other side of Tundra.  The boulder
field is quite hard and slow.  I then hiked most of the way to Puppet Lake
and then turned around and camped at the far side of Tundra.

On Sunday I started to return around 6:00am and hiked around Clatha Peak via
Figure Eight Lake.  I was back at my car by 6:00pm.  I was able to hike
pretty fast because I used a bivy sack and ate sandwiches and cinnamon buns
all weekend (no stove etc.).

The day hike that you are suggesting on Sunday is totally doable.  Lots of
people used to do it from Lizzie Lake when you could drive up there.  The
toughest part is going to be your first backpacking day.  I think that you
are looking at 16km or so.

The routes are all very easy to follow and well cairned.  I don’t understand
all of the comments about it being difficult.

I photocopied the pertinent pages from the Stein book in the library (it is
reference only cant' take out - a must to have) and calculated the GPS
points from the Stein map.  I verified them with my GPS when I was there.
You shouldn’t need them if it is clear out.  If the weather is nasty – all
bets are off.  I wouldn’t want to be up there in the fog, rain or clouds.
It would be easy to get lost, and it would be awful.  I wouldn’t recommend
going unless the weather is perfect.

I suggest that you drive up to the trailhead on Friday evening.  It does
take a few hours to get there.  That way you have all Saturday for the
backpack.  Based on what you have accomplished this year – you can do it.

Here are my GPS points:

Parking Lot   50 11 47 N   122 27 39 W
Lizzie Lake – 50 08 05     122 10 10
Cabin         50 07 52     122 21 50
Iceberg Lake  50 08 04     122 19 53
Hart Lake     50 08 05     122 20 45
Clatha        50 08 42     122 17 56
Cherry        50 18 55     122 19 06

You should verify them on the map.

I took photos of the route and will attach them to this message.  If you
need explanations email me or call at 922-6630 and I will assist further.
You can see my beloved sweatshirt in happier times on my backpack.  If it is
still wearable – can you bring it back to me?  If not – you might as well
leave it where it is.

I’ve never commented on the forum before and prefer not to, but I can’t
believe the season you are having and respect your attitude and
capabilities.  I just wanted to support you.  Best of luck and I look
forward to the report.  Here is hoping that the weather holds out.
