Some info for ur ref
Camp Muir of Mt Rainier:
Camp Muir is the middle point from the parking to the summit. All hikers stop there and stay overnight for the 2nd day hiking to the pinnacle. Here is the basic info about it.
1. Round trip distance: 14.5 km.
Elevation gain: 1460m.
Parking lot elevation: 1650m.
Camp Muir: 3100m.
By FAA rule, if it stays above 3500m to 4500m more than 30 minutes, u might
need oxygen supply. Lhasa is 3760m and has 77% of sea level oxygen.
2. From elevation of 2100m, it is snow covered with high elevation. Under this condition, the normal distance could become extremely difficult. For example, it took us more than 30 minutes to hike the last 100 meter to the Camp Muir shelters. I named it as the “longest 100 meters”.
3. Equipments: Must: 1.Water proof hiking boots (we had regular ones), 2.Hiking poles (I had one and lost another one at Elfin Lake), 3. Gaiters (one pair), 4. Sun protection (we forgot). Better have: 1. Crampons (we did not have) 2. Water proof pants such as ski pants (we had blue jeans). Then u could “ski” down the hill.
Personally, I highly recommend it to all of u. 1. Hiking in snow in the hottest summer is a super enjoyment. 2. After I accomplished the hiking yesterday, I felt I had a great achievement in my hiking life (Now I can add it on my hiking resume). 3. Believe me, I am one the slowest hikers in our club. If I can, all of u can do it. The good hikers can do the round trip for eight hrs and slow hikers need 10 hrs. Yesterday, we did in 9.5 hrs. Finally, it would be my honor to be your host if u r to hike Camp Muir. |
