Diamond Head Road(Access To Elfin Lake Trail & Red Heather)
Diamond Head Road(Access To Elfin Lake Trail & Red Heather)
Bulletins:
2006.12.02 Vito Gudaitis
Road and Trail Both in Great Shape: The upper part of the road is in excellent winter shape: plowed, with hard-packed snow providing good traction. There is no sign of the ice mentioned in the previous bulletin, although the lower part of the road has some icy patches, but nothing serious. As expected after the recent snow dump, the trail has plenty of snow cover and is incredibly easy to ski down.

Markings: ICBC calls the lower section the "Mamquam Road"
Access To: Elfin Lake Trail to Red Heather and Elfin Lakes shelters.
Condition: Regularly graded and maintained, plowed in winter (with delay after heavy snow). No waterbars.
General Route: From Squamish up the Mamquam River, then climbs to Garibaldi Park. The parking lot now requires you to pay the $3.00/day or have $50 pass.
How To Find: From Highway 99 turn right about 500 meters past the bridge over the Mamquam River. The first section is paved, but then becomes potholed as you head east and upward. After about 9 km there is a turn to the left and the road doubles back to the northwest. This is the park boundary. The level spot just beyond the turn is often a good place to chain up. After the turn, the road climbs back to the west. On this stretch of road you will encounter the "long hill" at 2600 feet, which can require 4WD or chains. After 3 or 4 km, at 2800 feet, you reach a sharp switchback back to the east at the foot of a short, steep hill. This short hill is known as "scary hill" because it is often very icy in winter. The hill often requires either 4WD or chains, and many people park at the bottom. Once above the hill, it is only 0.25km to the parking lot and the start of the Elfin Lakes trail. |
